Bea's Quilt Along Week 5

This week our task  for Bea's Quilt Along was to applique the center square of the quilt.  She suggested using a button hole stitch and I did... up to a point. I did a regular zig zag around the flower petals because I didn't want to spend the extra time it would take to meticulously go around those. I fussy cut the diamonds and flower centers. I had a little difficulty at the points of the diamonds, having never used a button hole stitch before, so they aren't picture perfect but they will do.
I can never seem to get a photo to come out squared up. My camera needs a ruler....

Next week we will put all the pieces together. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Quick Work

I have been sewing like a madwoman today. I needed to get this done for my little man so he could wear it to the Easter celebration at Mother's Day Out.
I found the fabric online and LeLe and I had a fit over it. Since it's obviously Easter fabric, we are trying to get as much wear out of it this week as possible. So, to MDO tomorrow, then to his ENT appointment, and then Sunday morning for Easter services. He has a little white polo shirt and some white socks and sandals to wear with it. I know he's going to be adorable...but then he always is!! Ha.

I couldn't make something for LMW without making something for my Little Klaire (even though she's still in hiding) so I made this as well. Again, I used fabric from Ozark Fabric and Other Fun Stuff.
I've got a little tweaking to do. I need to get rid of the blue marking dots, and fix a little tuck in one of the arm holes. I also want to add a little sumpin sumpin to it, but don't have anything on hand to embellish it with. I may have to make a run to Wally World to see if I can pick up some trim of some kind.

The pattern also has little cropped pants that I'm going to try to run up really quick sometime tomorrow too. I think Klaire's Mommy and Daddy will like it. It's been a looong time since I sewed such a tiny little dress, but I took my time and eased my way back in to it. Thank goodness it was an easy pattern. :)

I hope you all have a happy Thursday!!

I'm On a Roll

I was able to run this little outfit up pretty quickly. I started it yesterday, and finished it this morning after I tried it on the little man to make sure it was going to fit.
Getting the little booger to stop long enough to try something on is a chore, but once he does, he wants to keep it on. He runs around like a wild child every time I try clothes on him. Funny kid. He seems to like what I've been making so far.
Batman approves!
I have two more of these to make. One for Easter and one just because that's what we want out of the fabric. Then it will be on to shorts and more shirts appliqued to match....if that's ok with Mommy??

Quick Sew Up For The Boy

LMW needs some spring and summer clothes. And I've gotten a bee in my bonnet to sew some up. I've bought a few yards of fabric from Ozark Fabric and More Fun Stuff ( I love that place!!) and a couple of patterns, sew I've begun trying to create some things for him.
I plan to make at least three sets of overall shorts and a few more pairs of shorts. Then we'll see.
I used to make stuff like this for my kids years and years ago. I didn't realize how much I missed it until I started on LMW's stuff. I'm having a good time, and it's helping the time pass until the weather is warm enough to actually wear shorts. I'm having issues with the groundhog.....

Week 4 of Bea's Quilt Along

Here are this week's blocks for Bea's Quilt Along. The Shoo Fly blocks were fairly easy, but I did wind up making them twice. The first time I used a scant 1/4" allowance and it just wasn't enough to make the squares the right size, nor have enough of an allowance on the outside edges. So, I did them over with a more accurate seam allowance.
Aside from this, I have been working on some shorts and overall shorts for my little man. I hope to get some of them finished tomorrow....Although it will be a while before he can wear them. The temps went from upper 70s to lower 40s. Rain and cold. I hope the flowers folks have started putting out don't freeze. It's just a little too soon in my opinion.

My mother's irises are putting on blooms. I'm excited to see them flourish after transplanting last year. When they begin to open, I'll post a photo.

Back to the NICU

With all the gifts to make for Christmas and my soon to arrive Little Klaire, my ministry quilts have been horribly neglected. God gave me a little nudge the other day, so it's back to the NICU I go.

I bought a very sweet panel from Hillbilly Tonya at Ozark Fabrics and Other Fun Stuff. I didn't know what I would do with it when I purchased it, but it became very clear when I received that little nudge from Above.
I did some free motion in the panel part and then straight lines plus meandering lines down the sides. I always struggle with naming my quilts. Sometimes I think it's silly, but it seems like a quilt should have a name. The only thing I can think of for this one, is Garden of Love. If anyone has any other ideas, I'm open to suggestion for sure!
I feel better now, knowing I'm back on the path God sent me. It feels really good to know that there will be a child who is warmed if not blessed by this quilt.

Quilt Along Week 3

I didn't think I'd be able to get this week's quilt along blocks done, but I somehow found the time to do them. I love the colors!
I considered using a much lighter aqua for the corners, but after auditioning it, the white just disappeared, so my friend Janice and I decided the more vibrant blue was the way to go.
To be honest, I'm not a pastel kind of person. I always choose bright vibrant colors so this will suit me just fine.

Yesterday I received a big box from Ozark Fabric and was elated! Even LMW was happy to pet it and play with it.
This afternoon, I deliver the quilt I named "Christy's Dance" to my sister-in-law. I'm anxious to see her reaction.
I think this is National Quilting Day or something like that. I was able to celebrate by a little stitching on the quilt along blocks. Yay Me!!

Finished Refurbish

As I shared a few posts ago, I've been refurbishing a yard flag. I love to reduce/reuse/recycle and I couldn't see throwing it away and buying a new one, when I knew I could repaint it for another year.
This is the before:
Washed out from the sun. Add a little acrylic paint made for the outdoors and VOILA!

It was so easy! Sort of like coloring. I just put the original color on all the places and blended.
I did this on my fall flag last year and even though there was a bit of cracking in the paint, it held up well. I'll probably be able to get another year out of that one. I'm hoping to get two years from this one as well.

Happy Thursday everyone!!

Toiling On

I'm working on a UFO...and the old hymn "Toiling On" came to mind.
This is going to be a summer weight quilt for my husband's 'man cave'.
It pretty much turned out as I planned. I found the pattern on google, but never could find the source. It was called Winding Vines I think. It's made from a hodge podge of fabrics that came from several different places. The points on the edge are fabric from one of my mother's shirts. I'm really glad to be able to incorporate things like that.
It's not large enough, I need to add at least 12 more inches all the way around, but I haven't decided exactly how I want to do that. After all that work, I certainly don't want to just throw a border around it. I'm thinking of seeing if my lqs has any of the rust color left, and making some more squares to go around it. I rather like that idea, but I don't want it to be too "busy" and I don't want to detract from the pattern. I have some of my husband's old shirts that I could make more points with. The color and pattern would blend in well with my mother's shirt fabric. I may do that. Decisions decisions!!

In any case I'm glad to have it to this stage.

Week 2 of the Quilt Along

I'm so pleased with myself. (not proud, just pleased) I followed Bea's directions to the letter and was able to put these four blocks together in record time.
I had to pay extremely close attention to my points and seam allowances. Even had to finagle a few of them to make sure I had enough allowance to attach them without taking the points off, but I took my time for once. *silly grin*
This is a skill building project and I'm learning so much!! I'm very glad I decided to join in with Bea and the others.
Now that I have this done, I might actually be able to focus on a little much delayed housework. *frown* And maybe more work on my flag refurbishing. Woo Hoo!!

Have a great weekend everyone!!

UFOs and Finishes

I have made some headway with my summer quilt UFO.
This is just three of the rows laid out on a bed. The last three rows are yet to be assembled but I'm getting there.

I finished all the little gifts for my Little Klaire. They will be gifted to her Mommy and Daddy on Sunday afternoon at a shower in their honor.

Every time I thought I was finished, I decided to add something. But it was fun doing it for one of my family members for a change. I'd planned to make another quilt, but time got away from me.
I think I may be doing more sewing for LMW and LK in the future. Making clothes and such for the little darlings seem like a lot of fun. I remember doing quite a bit of it for my kids when they were tiny and I enjoyed it very much.

The weekend in upon us and I plan to work on my quilt along with Bea the next couple of days. I hope you all have a blessed weekend. And don't forget to set your clocks ahead!! (I really wish we'd just let time alone...)

March BOM

I've had this done for a while now. I just can't help but jump ahead when I'm having so much fun!!
This was pretty easy and I love how it turned out. I also did a second one that has been on the blog for a couple or three weeks now.
A simple applique with some decorative stitching.

Here is Janice's, my BOM partner's block.
She also did an applique, but I somehow missed saving that one. I don't think she was all fired up about it though, as it was her first stab at machine applique.
Here is Janice's shamrock applique block. She did it again and was happier with it. I'm glad she let me share it with you.

Today will be nice and sunny and the temps are beginning to warm up. It's supposed to be in the 70s Saturday. A far cry from you folks up in the north with your wicked snow storms. Be safe my friends!!

Weekend Work

I was able to get quite a bit done this weekend for a change. Made me do a happy dance for sure!
In Bea's Quilt Along I was able to get the first blocks done. Yay me!!
I seem to overcompensate a bit trying for a scant 1/4" seam allowance when I really need to make it a true 1/4, so a had a little trouble with my pointy points. I'm learning though.
I'm anxious for the next step, but really need to take the time before then to get some other things done.

I started refurbishing a garden flag that has seen better days.
You can see here where I painted, and where I stopped. It's taking a while, but I love the process. And it's free as opposed to spending money on a new one. I love it and will have it finished in plenty of time for Spring and Easter.
Wouldn't that make a great quilt?!

I'm linking up with Bea today.

Quilt Along with Beaquilter

I've never done a whole quilt along, but I'm going to attempt one with Bea.
It started yesterday (March 1) but I don't have my fabrics together yet, so I'll be starting a week late. That's ok, because I just found out my local quilt shop is having a 50% off sale on all their cotton fabric next Saturday. Woo Hoo!! I'll get some cool stuff I know and will be much happier working on this if I have a set of fabrics that please me for this particular pattern. I'll post my fabric and hopefully my two sessions of quilt along work next weekend.

If you are so inclined, you might jump over to Beaquilter and check out the fun!

I visited my LQS and purchased enough fabric to begin. It's much prettier in person and the red and blue in the large print is the same shade as the other fabrics.
When I got home, I discovered I have some yellow and another blue that should work well with this. They are scraps, but I'll make it work. Now, all I need is the white printed and the large blue floral, then I'll be all set. I hope to at least get this cut out today. If I don't get it sewn up, I'll work on it tomorrow afternoon.
